morvala festival of arts : why event photography matters
We had never been camping before. So naturally, our first proper camping experience involved a five-year-old, far too many bags, cameras, blankets, food, layers for every possible kind of Cornish weather, and a slightly optimistic belief that we knew exactly what we were doing. We did not , but it became one of our best family adventures. Set in the Cornish landscape and filled with music, artists, makers, workshops, families and the kind of light photographers quietly dream about, MORVALA gave us much more than a beautiful weekend away.
It also reminded us why event photography matters.
More than proof that an event happened
An event is never only the programme, the stage or the headline performance, its real character often lives somewhere in between. It is in the audience responding to the music, the conversations happening at the edge of the field, the volunteers keeping everything together and the children dancing without hesitation. The changing light, tired feet, laughter, small gestures and unexpected encounters that could easily disappear once the event is over.
These are the moments we are most drawn to. Strong event photography does more than prove that people turned up. It communicates atmosphere, and it shows how people engaged, it captures the personality of the event and the values behind it.
Most importantly, it helps people understand what it actually felt like to be there.
Photographing the whole experience
At OPEN KAMERA, we approach event photography through a balance of engagement and observation. Sometimes we step into the energy, speak to people and build a connection, and other times, we quietly blend into the background and wait for the moment to unfold naturally. That balance helps us create photographs that feel present rather than staged, as we want the images to hold the raw atmosphere, the place, the people and the little details that make one event completely different from another.
Our outdoor portrait studio
On the third day of the festival, we created a mini outdoor studio experience between the trees, we hung a backdrop outside, set up our cameras and invited festival visitors to step in for a portrait. There was something beautifully simple about it as there was no formal studio walls, no complicated set, just a backdrop moving slightly in the breeze, soft natural light, trees around us and people enjoying themselves. For a few minutes people stepped away from the movement, stood in front of the camera and allowed themselves to be seen. The outdoor studio portraits created a quieter record of the people who made up that temporary community.
Why professional event photography matters
An event may last for a day or a weekend, but good visual content can continue working long after everyone has gone home. It can help organisations promote future events, communicate their identity, create meaningful social media content and show genuine audience engagement.
It can strengthen funding applications, evaluations and reports by showing not only what was delivered, but how people responded.
It can help recognise the contribution of artists, volunteers, sponsors, partners and the communities who took part.
It can also build a visual archive that becomes more valuable with time.
For community groups, charities, cultural organisations and independent festivals, photography becomes more than promotion, it becomes memory, evidence and storytelling all at once.
It gives the event a life beyond the final performance, the last workshop and the moment the tents come down.
