A DIALOGUE WITH THE SEA: THE BLUE SPARKS JOURNEY
There are moments when a project doesn’t begin with an idea, but with a question, or realisation. That living in Plymouth, surrounded by the waters of Plymouth Sound National Marine Park, the sea has always been present in our lives, yet had never fully invited it into our creative practice.
The sea was always there.
And slowly we began to feel that perhaps there was a connection waiting to be explored - not only for us as photographers, but for others too. Thanks to the support of Plymouth Sound National Marine Park and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, we have been given this amazing opportunity to explore this idea through Blue Sparks - an initiative where analogue photography, alternative darkroom practices and sustainable processes meet something even more important: a dialogue between people and the sea.
Connecting people with the sea
At the heart of this project is a simple invitation - to slow down, to come closer to the shoreline, to notice what the sea is already offering. The sea carries stories. It is a place of arrivals and departures - ships leaving harbours, people arriving to new lands. journeys beginning somewhere and ending somewhere else. standing by the coastline in plymouth, we often think about this. Because we too arrived here from somewhere else. As migrants, we know what it means to cross borders - not always by water, but through the invisible tides of life that carry us from one place to another. We came from Poland years ago, searching for something that at that time was difficult to name. Opportunity, perhaps. Curiosity. A sense of possibility. Over time Plymouth became home. And now standing by the sea, we realise how deeply this landscape reflects our own story. The sea reminds us that movement is part of being human. That every shoreline carries traces of journeys - of people, memories, languages and dreams. Maybe that is why this project feels so personal. Because working with the sea is also a way of reflecting on where we came from, and how we arrived here.
Photography as a bridge
Through Blue Sparks, we are exploring how analogue photography and alternative darkroom processes can become a bridge between people and teh coasltine around us. The shoreline becomes a place of reflection. The process of making images becomes a way of re-discovering our relationship with nature. But this project is not only about our own practice. It’s about creating opportunities for others to experience this connection too. Because sometimes the most powerful moments begin with something very simple: standing by the water, listening to the tide, and noticing what the sea leaves behind.
An invitation
Over the next few months we will be opening this journey to others. We are preparing a series of coastal workshops and gathering, where we will invite you to join us along the shoreline. Together we will:
collect drifted seaweed and natural materials
experiment with analogue photography and alternative darkroom processes
explore creativity as a way of connecting with the sea
These sessions are not only about photography. They are about experience, curiosity, and shared discovery.
Soon, we will be sharing dates, locations and times for our coastal workshops, and we would love for you to be part of this journey. Follow along, keep eyes open for updates, and when the time comes - come and meet us on the shore.
Let’s listen to the sea, and let’s create new stories with it.
Follow our journey and stay connected with us on Instagram and Facebook, where we will be sharing details about the upcoming workshops and gatherings.
The sea is waiting. And perhaps, it has a story for you too.
